Type as Information Poster

January – May 2021

  • For the semester of Typography 2, I perfected a visual dialogue between structured and unstructured typographic elements within a large poster frame – composing ideal relationships between type as image and type as information/text. The type as image supports each definition with an example with shifts in size color and character. Within the poster there is over 21 type terms and 28 letter form parts clearly defined and exemplified from research. The type as information is the definitions, recognized with a unified voice that quietly informs. The poster follows a grid system made precisely of pica increments.

  • This poster involved 4 months of detailed critiques and refinement. I chose the underlying theme of caffeine, coffee, and the excitement of that morning cup. I used descriptors of this concept to point out the type terms and letter forms. For the first few weeks, I worked with black and white concepts to help me decide necessary contrasting and textures. Then while bringing in the image that is in my final poster- I began to carefully create my color scheme of coffee hues with the contrasting pop of orange- red, and teal blue. Each week I prepared revisions based off what was shared in critique the week before & additions of more and more definitions. I chose typefaces that had had different characteristics to create a dynamic composition and allow for visual examples for the definitions. I had a close relationship with my own grid system where I aligned definitions and both broke the rules of the lines. Through this project I gained an appreciation for all small type forms and and terms. As well, I learned about keeping a dynamic layout that is intriguing and busy but not overwhelming.
