Book Design

This book design and layout assignment for my Typography 2 class this requires reading, sketching, editing, and developing grids in master page to effectively present text and image throughout the length of this 75+ page book. The goal was to use everything I have learned from previous projects to establish a clear hierarchy, direction and an effective rhythm and page dynamic. The book itself must have selected text edited down to 5000 words and at least 4-5 levels of image and type size that illustrate hierarchy through size shifts, composition, variation and careful consideration for the graphic character. The final piece demonstrates a clear understanding of static vs active marginal space, the use of a grid system to emphasize hierarchy and the working dynamics of the frame.

I chose the concept of Christian Dior because his elegant and intriguing designs are some of my favorite to this day. To accompany the large array of photos that I found and credited, I chose a short book on botany for the body paragraphs. I chose to divide the book into chapters that chronologically feature some of the most important designers that have carried on the legacy of the label. Within each chapter, I considered the sequence of the stories through a visual hierarchy. There is a large full bleed color tinted image of each designer featured in the 5 chapters. Then the stories blend into their creative visions, sketches, campaigns and fashion shows. The designs are not predictable but dynamic and intriguing. There are at least 5 different levels of typography with character, size, treatment, and color.
