Global Warning:
An Environmental Justice Campaign
January – April 2021
-
My Graphic Design 2 course was dedicated entirely to researching, planning and designing a social or environmental justice campaign for a topic important to me. I chose to call out the overwhelming threat that corporate fossil fuel companies pose to our environment and provide multiple calls to action. As someone who is deeply concerned about the climate and environment, this campaign is inspired by a statistic that shocked me: “just 20 companies are responsible for 1/3rd of global fossil fuel emissions” - The Guardian.
-
The Key to combating climate change in the United States involves targeting a relatively small amount of companies in the grand scheme of emissions. “Just 100 companies have been the source of more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988” (Guardian).
-
The message is bold and in your face, with bright colors that symbolize a flame and tag lines that demand actions. The tone is straightforward. I am making it abundantly clear to these companies that the people know what they are doing to the environment, and they demand system change with more ethical practices. Along with this, they must be honest and disclose their true footprint on the environment.
-
I am targeting the large corporations that have the highest emissions of fossil fuels in the world in recent decades, specifically those that have been deceiving towards the public. This includes the companies featured in the study by The Guardian (ExxonMobil, Shell, BP and Chevron) as well as the investors that are actively putting money into these companies. I am targeting them because they hold the opportunity to combat climate change.
-
Educate the target audience on the umbrella of issues they have created and get them to use their power to disclose their damage and update their practices. Get them to stop spreading information, update their business models and pay back the damage that they have cause on our earth.
