Four Generations

Stop Motion and soundscape

  • I was assigned a stop motion and abstract sound project in my 4D Studio course and I combined the two projects to create “4 Generations.” A project that stands for the me and the 3 generations of women before, through our Jewelry.

The sound had to compile 10 different original sounds recorded by me on a microphone. These sounds must not include a beat in them or any melody, I compiled them in Adobe Audition to make something with a clear story line

The stop motion had to be completed with 500+ photos, which I meticulously had to line up with the audio from the soundscape.

  • For the soundscape, I layered and edited sounds on top of each other so that any recognizable sound was distorted and abstract. A pen dropping sounded like nothing like what it once did and so on. There are different points of tension and calm. The sound does not have meaning but it has both harmony discomfort.

The photos for the stop motion were taken after the sound was confirmed, and I very carefully conepted how to depict each particular sound. The soft sounds had small movements but the loud thuds had drastic changes to composition. The planning was almost as important as the execution and editing. I combined rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets from the 4 generations of women and I considered how each piece of jewelry would sound. I took 500+ photos and edited them in premier pro. I took away from this project a strong understanding of frame rates, sound manipulation, shutter speeds and much more.
